Personality:
This kid has an appearance contradicting to his personality, at least clothing-wise. Physically, Nico stands around 5'10'', weighing in somewhere around 153 lbs. He has a scrawny build with not a lot of visible fat or muscle. In fact, Nico looks like he'd be better off on a basketball court than anywhere else. He has light colored skin that doesn't tan easily.
His hair, silver in color, is roughly chin length, if not a tad bit shorter than that. It lies flat, parted down the middle with his bangs framing both sides of his face, looking a bit layered. The back curls outwards at the ends. There's rarely a clump out of place on a normal day. Very rarely will he pull his hair back. Nico's eyes are a light pale green color, usually looking silver, green, or blue depending on the light.
While wearing his school uniform, Nico has the blazer open, revealing whatever shirt he pulled off of his floor. Wrinkles are usually common and high in number. When he's not wearing his school uniform, he's usually in a T-shirt of some sort. Solid colored or with a graphic on it, it doesn't matter. Most of the time Nico has a button-up shirt over a T-shirt, the front left open. He isn't above wearing hoodies and actual jackets when he has to, though, but they're always left open to show off whatever T-shirt he's wearing that day. All in all, shirt wise, he can usually be seen dressed in layers. When it comes to pants, style doesn't matter as long as they're long. Jeans, nice pants, whatever the occasional calls for. Usually there's a belt or two on to hold up his pants or to just add decoration.
No matter what, Nico has some sort of accessory or three around his neck. Chains, chokers, whatever. More often than not they're shiny and have a pendant or something of that sort hanging from it. There's not many that are fully beaded or decorated. Besides that, there's usually bands and bracelets of some sort on each wrist, but the style and number varies each day. Usually there's always a thick black leather band on his left wrist with thinner gel bands on his right.
Nico is an interesting individual when it comes to personality. He's usually quite silent, never betraying exactly what he's thinking. When he is thinking, and that happens a lot, Nico looks as if he doesn't notice anything around him and like he doesn't want to be around others. Unless asked a question or wanting to make his input on something, he usually remains quiet. The reason Nico doesn't speak much is because he doesn't think that what he has to say is important or relevent to the conversation at hand. Since he doesn't speak much, his body language can reveal a lot about what he's feeling.History:
The lack of vocal communication between Nico and other people can leave the impression that he is distant and doesn't like company. This couldn't be farther from the truth, as Nico is a friendly person who loves hanging out with people. Nico isn't outgoing enough to be the first to introduce himself or be the one to start a conversation. It's only after he starts thinking of someone as a friend does he begin to speak a bit more openly. There's still more silence than there are words, but it's a start.
Despite his friendly behavior, Nico is usually always thinking pessimistic thoughts. He can and will try to find something bad in any situation. These thoughts have a small impact on what he does and does not do. Most of the time it effects his dueling and ability to try new things. When his negative thoughts do start to effect what he does Nico tends to get nervous. Though, when enough bad things happen to him he starts making mistakes. This is most evident in his dueling. On the subject of trying new things, Nico is always a bit hesitant towards them, needing some persuasion from friends before he tries it.
In addition to the above Nico is one naive idiot. He doesn't usually pay attention unless it has to do with something he enjoys. This involves many situations where he'll start out paying attention only to drift off and return when hearing the odd word or two and having to idea what's going on. Otherwise he doesn't know much outside of the little he does, even if it relates to something he already knows. In this way, he may know one thing about Duel Monsters, but not another, leaving him confused and curious when the unknown topic is brought up.
While it doesn't take a lot to gain his respect and friendship, Nico doesn't outright refer to anyone as his friend, finding them to feel more like acquaintances. What he calls them doesn't change how he acts around them. Nico is a little more open around them, finding it a tad bit easier to speak his mind. As well, he's more inclined to listen to what's being said if it's coming from the people he usually hangs out with.
Nico doesn't like feeling as if people pity him or feel sorry for him, and so he'll try to hide whatever's bothering him. He'll bottle up emotions until eventually something triggers a burst of emotion from him. These bursts usually aren't long or even much, tending to be a sudden shout or sob depending on what problem he's been ignoring. It takes a lot of poking and prodding before he'll freely speak to anyone about what's bothering him.
Like everyone else, Nico also has his quirks. For one, he absolutely loves anything shiny. Chains, nickels, quarters, grocery carts, whatever. Nico actually has an odd little collection of random shiny objects. For another, he has a tendency to put things such as pencils and pretzel sticks into his mouth and fidget with them, sometimes even forgetting they're there until someone mentions something. His overactive mind gives him good material for writing random little stories, which is something Nico likes to do in his spare time... and during classes. Peas are his mortal enemy.
Born to a northern state by the name of Minnesota, Nico grew up in a small town with an older sister and a single mother. His mom was forced to work two part-time jobs in order to try to get the money needed to stay in their small apartment. His sister didn't help at all, having hit that rebellious teen age, and made times tough. Nico's mom was constantly stressed out over having enough money to support herself and her two kids. Other family members tried to help out financially, but it didn't always work out for the group of three. His father did little besides send child-support checks.Status: Academy Student- Second Year
Many times Nico received the short end of the stick. His sister was constantly yelling at him over the smallest things, his mother would snap at him after a long day at work, and he felt alienated by most of the kids he considered friends. The young boy knew his mother had enough to worry about, and despite his boredom and depression would give her a smile and tell her he was fine when questioned otherwise. He did that for all of his family, not wanting others to worry about him when there was so much else to worry about. It was this very thought that silenced Nico.
Things only became worse for him. When he was in middle school, after a fight with their mom, his sister left. Months later his grandma became ill and was admitted to the hospital. His grades dropped to barely passing. One thing after another happened. There was very little silver lining on the clouds that hung over Nico's life. He began having a pessimistic view on everything, only able to find the bad stuff.
His mom began to notice. Nico didn't spend any time outside of the house and remained quiet. In a desperate attempt she bought her son some Duel Monster cards. They weren't many in number and poor in quality, but it was enough to get Nico curious about the game. When looking through the cards his mom had given him during lunch one day some kids in Nico's homeroom noticed, questioning him about the cards and even involving him in their duels. Through them he was able to slowly build a better deck than what he had before. For once it actually looked as if something good had happened to him.
When news got around about a school devoted to the game Nico had become interested in, all of his friends looked up information about it. They knew not everyone would be able to attend. It was decided to have a mini-tournament between friends. The winner would have the full support of the rest behind him. And so it began. Nico had dueled them many times before and was quite relaxed until things started going south. In the final match it was Nico against his friend Jake. Jake had gained the upper hand, and Nico had started to panic. He began making moves that only put him farther into the corner. When it was over, Jake was the obvious victor.
Nico congratulated Jake on his win and being the one to apply for the Duel Academy. Jake broke the news to Nico that it had been decided ahead of time that Nico would be the one to go and his friends had set this up to try to help prepare him for it. They would do whatever they could to help Nico be able to get into the Academy. Nico was shocked, and when questioned why they only said that he had the most to learn by going there, and that they didn't want to go to some school that would take the fun out of dueling for them. And, with his friends' help, Nico was able to pass the entrance exam and is in his second year at the school.
