Matt is a rather calm and friendly person with a positive outlook on life. His good manners and afforementioned demeanor make him easy to get along with for most people. The only people he generally does not get along with are, for the lack of a better tern, assholes. He tends to ignore these people though, so in the end, he doesn't deal with them a whole lot. He tries to leave a good impression on people he meets, preferring to be on a person's good side as opposed to their bad. He's a kind and warm hearted individual who believes in some degree of honor, which can be seen in his day to day activities, such as helping people with their school work.History:
Yet, despite all of this, Matt is generally a quiet one in public, though by no means unfriendly. He will still act kindly towards others and keep his friendly demeanor. It's just that he does not feel comfortable in large crowds, unless it's an organized event, like a dance. He prefers smaller groups or, sometimes, his own company over that of others. Around friends and Sophia, he's more talkative and playful, although he can be protective of his adoptive sister when she is around.
Outside of friends and family, Matt loves two things: rain and chocolate. While rain is by far his favorite thing, it's less common and thus not many people know about his love for it. When it rains, Matt tends to go to his secret area in the forest and listen to the rain. It calms him and gives him a sense of peace that nothing else can. When it comes to chocolate, Matt is a total chocoholic. He always has at least five bars of chocolate on him, and when he can, always has a bar in his hand.
When Matt is ever in a bad mood, he tends to just... disappear from society. During these bad moods, he can generally be found in his secret area within the woods, silent and in thought while eating a chocolate bar.
Matt was born into a poor family living in the slums of Domino, Japan. Both his mother and father were unemployed, living off of what little bit of money they still had. Because of this, they could hardly afford to keep themselves on their feet, let alone raise a child. So when Matt was born, his parents gave him to an orphanage to raise, in hopes that he would be able to make a better life for himself. Matt was only a single year old when he was given to an orhpanage, so his biological parents did not leave any lasting impressions or memories on him. So when he turned five, and he learned the truth about his parents, the effect on him was generally minimal. He looked on with a positive outlook, going by the saying, "You can't miss what you've never had".Status: Fourth Year Student
As Matt grew, he was given the choice of enrolling in a few activities outside of his normal studies. The classes he chose were martial arts and archery, going along with his counselor's reasoning that both took more discipline than the other choices and would likely keep him away from any bad influences the city had to offer. Matt started these his martial arts classes at the age of five, and his archery classes at age seven due to age restrictions on the activity itself. Matt quickly gained skill in his archery lessons, being his favorite out of the two he had chosen. His martial arts also improved at a good rate, although not as quickly as his archery.
On Matt's ninth birthday, some of his friends gave him a deck of cards as a present. The game, Duel Monsters, was supposed to be extremely popular and fun to play, so Matt and his friends took up the game and began a small club within the orphanage. This small club soon grew, with many of the kids learning and picking the game up. Soon, the club was big enough that the adults running the orphanage began organizing small tournaments for the kids to play in. By the following year, Matt had managed to gain a large collection of cards and become the best player in the orphanage.
Only a few weeks after his tenth birthday, the monthly tournament was held. Of course, Matt entered alongside of his friends. Duel Monsters had become his main hobby, along side of his archery and martial arts classes, so it was only natural for him to try and get better. On the same day, a regal looking man came to the orphanage. The man apparently had decided to watch the tournament, as Matt saw him on the looming over the other kids as he watched the duels several times. The tournament lasted for most of the day, with Matt coming out in first place again. As a reward, he got a card: XX-Saber Hyunlei.
After the tournament, the man who had arrived to watch the tournament finally revealed his true intentions and name. His name was Asbel Hirama, and he had come to the orphanage looking to adopt a child. He already had a daughter of his own blood, but his wife had been forced to go to America on business before they could have a second child. Impressed with Matt's skills in not only dueling, but in archery and martial arts, activities he too had taken up as a child, Asbel decided to adopt Matt. While Matt was officially adopted into the Hirama family the next day, Matt was able to keep his biological last name, Miyama, at his own request. He had been told of his last name a few years back, and did not want to give it up.
At his new house, Matt was introduced to his new adoptive family. His adoptive grandmother, Noel, was the typical grandmother stereotype. She stayed at home and did leasurly activities such as knitting and watching television, along with spoiling her grandkids. His adoptive sister, Sophia, was the same age as him and shared a similar interest in both martial arts and duel monsters. Aside from names and interests, he found out that his new adoptive father was the head CEO of a massive chain of resorts and product lines based on Duel Monsters.
Due to their shared interests, Matt and Sophia would spend a lot of time together, whether it be with friends, family, or just the two of them. They went out with friends together, they sparred in martials arts together, and dueled each other during their free time. Over the course of the year, the two formed a close bond of trust with each other. They went to each other with their problems, helped each other out on their schoolwork and worked, and overall looked out for each other, although Matt became a bit protective of Sophia. While they were twelve years old, Matt helped Sophia fight off a group of guys who were trying to make a forceful pass on her. While they did both get suspended for beating the other guys pretty much senseless, it was really then that people began to understand the bond of trust they shared.
When Matt and Sophia turned thirteen, they were enrolled into the world famous Duel Academy. Both of their tests landed them in Ra Yellow, which is where they would start their long dueling career. It was here that they learned that dueling in the city was nothing compared to the Academy. They both began to study and practice more diligently, trying to come up to Academy standards before they were to duel in front of others. It only took a few weeks until Matt and Sophia were up to par, but Matt's studies would not stop there. The assistant principle had taken notice to Matt and Sophia's rise in skills. After calling them to his office, he asked both of the siblings if they wanted to continue getting better. Matt agreed, but Sophia refused, wanting to get better by herself rather than with someone's help.
Matt's training took him up into the mountains regularly, whether it be for meditation or dueling the assistant headmaster or some other excersize. He spent less and less time with Sophia because of extended lessons or his own school work, but it didn't seem to matter to him anymore. All he could see was his own advancement, which bega causing tensions between the two. When the time came for the dorm advancement test, Matt passed into Obelisk with ease. After his own test, Matt got to watch his adoptive sister's test as well, noting how easily she passed as well. However, the tensions between the two caused them to pretty much ignore each other afterwards.
A few weeks later, Matt was able sit down and talk with Sophia. After a rather long conversation, Matt abandoned his trainig with the assistant headmaster, deciding to get better on his own strength, rather the rely on someone else's training. However, they would not be able to spend much time together, as an important note coming from home would cause them to make a decision. Their biological mother had come down with an rare infection and And was being treated in a hospital located in San Melina, California. Their father could not leave the country due to business, so he had decided to send one of the children. The child that went would be transferred to the San Melina Dueling Academy until the problem was resolved. After a long discussion, it was decided that Matt would go. He reasoned that he was the adopted child, and that she shouldn't have to give up her life in Domino for something that wouldn't last very long.
Matt was in San Melina the next morning, set up in his new dorm room and visiting his adoptive mother by the end of the day. Needless to say that she was surprised by Matt's sudden appearance, and Matt spent most of the night relaying things that had happened ever since he had been adopted. Despite their somewhat rocky start, the two got along quite well during the time Matt was at the hospital. They called home via web cam so that their mother could see how Sophia and Asbel were doing and otherwise had fun talks, lacking anything better to do in a hosptial room.
When it came to the new academy, it was clearly different than the academy he was so used to at this point. It was much more detailed and felt much more luxurious, not to mention much more expensive in it's design. Student and staff wise, it was extremely similar to the Duel academy back in Domino. They were duelists at heart and loved the game, and the staff was generally friendly. As a transfer student, he
However, by the end of the month, Matt's adoptive mother would pass away, despite the hospital and Matt's attempts to cure her. Before she passed, she signed a small fortune over to Matt, so that he and Sophia could cotinue their education back at Duel Academy. A few days later, Matt sent a letter and half of the money his adoptive mother left behind back home, telling his family what happened and that he was going to stay in San Melina. He felt like he had failed his adoptive family and couldn't face them face to face with the bad news.
Another year passed, and Matt had finally moved on. Though he still felt he could not go back home and face Sophia again, he felt that his adoptive mother and father would not want him to linger in the past. With a positive outlook, and a new year starting, Matt was now moving forwards again, despite losing communication with his family back home.
Additional Information:
[+] Matt has exceptional hearing and eyesight, something that he has never been able to explain. However, he rarely ever puts this to practical use outside noticing small things.
[+] I would like a position in as one of the academy's librarians, if it's not any trouble.
